Last week marked the beginning of a pilot program developed by Portland Playhouse's Education Director Nikki Weaver and Board Chair Harold Goldstein - a tour of solo performances created by previous Acting Apprentices. With Mind Over Matter, we will be visiting Portland area high schools, universities, and community organizations in Portland Playhouse's first touring production throughout the spring.
THE SPIRIT, Devised and performed by Joseph Gibson (2012-13)
Many choices we make in life shape who we are; some define us."The Spirit” explores that defining moment when who you think you are clashes with who you are.
SCHIZO, Devised and performed by Katie Watkins (2011-12)
Katie's brother was diagnosed with schizophrenia at age 11. Through the use of simulated auditory hallucinations, a visual representation of schizophrenia, songs and text, SCHIZO provides an insight into the normalcy and mundanity of his everyday life as he battles the chaos in his mind. A full length production of this show will be premiering in August 2015. Click here for details.
THE AMY SHOW, Devised and performed by Amy Katrina Bryan (2013-14)
The Amy Show is the journey of a young girl who wants to know why? Why..why...WHY!? "Why me?" "Why did I end up this way?" "Why did life deal me this hand?" Spoiler alert: she never finds out. This play will offer no answers but instead asks "Why not?"
Our first two performances took place at Lincoln High School last week. How did the performers feel it went?
"The kids seemed really engaged and Nikki facilitated good conversation."
"It's amazing to see how these three completely different pieces resonate with the students."
Keep an eye on our the Education section of our website to follow us as we continue to take these shows all over the city and beyond!
