The
Story on "No p.a. in NoPo"
The idea
for this series grew out of a technical difficulty. A few members of the Playhouse posse were attending a live music event
downtown when the soundboard crashed. After a spell of uncertainty and delay, the band decided just to go on without a p.a.
system. The band played quietly and the audience tuned in. After all they had to. A loud conversation, a crunching tortilla
chip or a coughing spell all drew a round of shushing from the rest of the audience. But since it was suddenly a unique music
moment, people wanted to listen.
The Playhouse bottled
that moment and brought it to their current home, a funky converted church that has the acoustics and the intimacy to make
such a series succeed. The result is the anti-club scene, where the band doesn't have to scream over the sound of clanking
bottles and drunken chatter (but don't worry, beer will be served!) No p.a. in NoPo is music presented theatre-style: without
a sound system and where an audience is completely drawn into the performance.
